Who we are
Mission Statement: “To see the ever-increasing number of injuries and deaths from motor vehicle collisions drop dramatically as a result of our efforts.”
Vision Statement: “To use our training and experience as police officers to equip drivers with the skills necessary to keep themselves safe on an otherwise dangerous road.”
In January of 2017, Jackson Colwell and I began our careers in law enforcement with the city of Kansas City, Missouri. We were both assigned to the East Patrol Division where we patrolled in the same vehicle as partners. After 6 years with KCPD, both of us left and began serving the city of Liberty, MO. While working in both cities, we saw and investigated countless motor vehicle collisions involving serious injury and death. We saw entire families, children, fathers and mothers killed on the road. We performed CPR, applied tourniquets, and shed many tears with grieving families as we delivered the worst news they’ve ever received.
Jackson and I decided enough was enough. We were tired of seeing so much loss of life. We saw a need. We decided to take the training we received in the police academy along with our law enforcement experience and offer it to drivers of all ages and levels. We want to prepare them for the unpredictability of the road. People need the training we’ve received. That’s when we created the 10-81 Driving Academy.
“10-81” is the ten-code used by police officers to covertly identify each other as law enforcement. The 10-81 Driving Academy is a police officer owned and operated driving academy located in the Liberty, Missouri area. Every instructor with our driving academy has law enforcement experience. Each has an intimate knowledge and familiarity with traffic law, tactical driving, traffic collisions, and an acute ability to identify and address threats on the road.
Every Police Officer receives training in the police academy commonly referred to as EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operations Course). During this training, officers learn how to operate a motor vehicle in an emergency capacity, heavily focusing on staying out of collisions. While operating in an emergency capacity, it’s common for civilians to pull out in front of officers, failing to hear or see their lights and sirens. Officers need to be ready to respond to these situations and make split second decisions. EVOC training focuses on teaching them how to do this with real-time hands-on training.
As certified EVOC instructors, we have designed a course to accomplish our mission of bringing this training to new or experienced drivers. Our exclusive *Real-Life Tactical Driving Course will train students in advanced braking, turning, and steering techniques that will equip them with the tools they need to keep themselves safe on an otherwise dangerous road.
